Umeå Barrack School is a virtual, profit-maximizing organization, dedicated to youthful production of research results despite unusual surroundings. The first (and last) Dean of the UBS was Nils Wåhlin. He automatically resigned when graduating as PhD, and now serves as Honorary Dean. As a consequence of the removal of the Barrack from campus ground in fall 1993, the UBS now exists as an underground organization within the Dept of Business Administration, Umeå Business School. We have, however, succeeded in maintaining the academic journal of the Barrack, "Barack-publikationer" or "Acta Scholae Castra Umensis (ASCU)" (see below).

Among our dearest traditions is the tetra-annual Hot-dog Eating Contest, initiated in 1993 and (hopefully) to be repeated in 1997. The current record is 23 hot-dogs, incorporating 11,5 breads. Another important event is the Viking March, where we march through the central parts of Brussels, wearing viking helmets. The first march occurred in 1993, and will be repeated A.S.A.P. In 1994, the Hooligan College (the link is no longer valid) was founded as an extension of the original Barrack community. So far, the College has undertaken three annual sauna-colloquia. The success of the College made us confident that the continuous invention of new academic traditions is secured for centuries to come.

In 1997, the board of Umeå Business School decided to change its English name to "Umeå School of Business and Economics". In order to keep up with the changes in our environment, we are therefore considering to change our own name to "Umeå School of Barracks and Hooligans". Time will show if this major reorientation will be implemented.

In a way, the Barrack still exists in our hearts and minds. We will never forget it.
